Our mission

The mission of the National Monument Srebrenica Genocide '95 Foundation is to realize, preserve and manage a monument at a prominent location in The Hague in memory of the victims of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide.

We draw the meaning of the word 'monument' wider than usually thought; not 'something made of stone,' like the National Monument on Dam Square in Amsterdam. The English word 'memorial' seems more accurate to us for what we mean by 'monument'. Perhaps best translated as 'memorial space' or 'memorial building'.

The creation process of the monument will be transparent. The public will be widely informed and invited to participate. We will invite all direct stakeholders to participate in the project to bring about social, cultural and financial support for the project, among other things. We will organize a design competition for the monument and a public debate to discuss the selected design solutions.

In this way, we want to create a memorial site that fits into the city of The Hague, is contemporary and represents as many interests as possible. We see it as a collective undertaking that fits our times and our democratic values. We are using the upcoming period to get as much input as possible on what qualities the National Srebrenica Memorial should meet. We also seek as much support as possible for the initiative to realize a National Srebrenica monument in The Hague. If you or your organization would like to support the initiative or if you have substantive input, please send us a message through our contact page.

Once we have gathered all the information that the monument should meet and we have explored the possibilities for a location in The Hague, we will announce the design competition via this website. We will also announce all prior public meetings about the initiative here as well.

Therefore, keep a close eye on the News page!
